Matthew 10:39 - "He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."

Dear family and friends,

I learned a lot this week, specifically about the blessings of obedience. And actually specifically about the blessings of obedience to the third man rule. As missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we live to a higher standard and we are asked and expected to follow a lot of rules. One of these is that we do not go inside alone
with a woman. We need to have a third man with us. I'm not completely sure of the origin of this rule, but we are asked to follow it. It's not always easy though! Especially if their husband isn't home or it is hard to get members to come out on joint teach with you and other missionaries aren't available, you just have to tell the nice lady who is open to the gospel that you'll come back another time. Elder Thornock and I have commited that we will follow it though, and so we have been trying our best to do so. We've seen blessings!

On Tuesday we had a lesson with a woman named Manushka. A super nice lady from Curicao who actually knows Oma Buntin. Unfortunately, when we got to her house for the appointment, she was home with only her daughter and some grandkids. So we told her about the rule (we should have told her before we made the appointment...) and we'll be setting up a new appointment soon. After we left her house we were walking down the street and started talking to this Curicaoan guy, Deng. Deng is 40-years-old and has a lot of questions. We have now had three lessons with him and are going back on Friday to eat lunch and talk about life after death. We wouldn't have met him if we hadn't followed the 3rd man rule! Crazy. So that is when I gained my testimony of the third man rule and that we are blessed when we follow it.

So the second experience this week with the 3rd man rule was on Sunday evening after dinner. We had gotten in contact with Barbara (Elder Wilson and I taught her a year ago.. she's awesome!) and we brought Elder Mancer and Elder Mostoller, the other Rotterdam South missionaries, with us to our appointment with her. She wasn't home :l So we waited a little to see if she would show up and then we started walking back to the car. We had gotten across the street when all of the sudden we hear this big pop! Then, these two polish guys, one carrying a plastic bag with something in it, come sprinting around the corner (luckily on the other side of the street). A few seconds later this turkish guy comes sprinting around the corner, holding something under his shirt/wasteband. All of the sudden as he is running and chasing these guys, he pulls out a gun and shoots three times at them and then keeps chasing them down the street and we hear a few more shots. It was crazy! We were all kind of shocked at what had happened and we got out of there pretty quickly. We were driving away and one of the other elders suggested that we go to the nearby police station and report what we had seen. There were already cops going to look for the guys but we went to the police station and they took us all seperately and we testified of what we had seen. That part was kind of fun... But wow did God protect us! That event could have unfolded in so many different ways. God really does protect the obedient missionary.

I hope you all have a great week and can see the blessings of obedience in your own lives! Becuase I promise you, we are really blessed when we do what He asks us to do.

Love,
Elder Wright
